Safety & Environmental
We are highly focused on the safety of our coal operations and work diligently to meet or exceed all safety and environmental regulations required by state and federal laws. Our non-fatal days lost time incidence rate for all operations for the year ended December 31, 2012 was 1.27 as compared to the most recent national average of 2.40, as reported by MSHA, or 47.1% below this national average. Non-fatal days lost incidence rate is an industry standard used to describe occupational injuries that result in loss of one or more days from an employee’s scheduled work. In addition, for the year ended December 31, 2012 our average MSHA violations per inspection day was 0.51 as compared to the most recent national average of 0.87 violations per inspection day as reported by MSHA, or 41.4% below this national average. In early 2012, we received seven Sentinels of Safety awards from the Department of Labor attributable to several of our mining locations. We believe our ability to minimize lost-time injuries and environmental and mine health and safety violations will increase our operating efficiency and maintain strong employee morale.
